13 Best Knife Sharpeners of 2021 [Our Test Results Included]

It’s a good idea to own a knife sharpener. All knives, even your best kitchen knife sets, eventually become dull and will need sharpening.

Imagine peeling an orange with a dull knife. The rubbery drag. The too deep or too thin cuts. Or how the edge easily misses the orange peel surface. Every slip increases your chance of injury. There is no hard, fast rule for the best time to sharpen your knife. Once your cuts are not clean, even, or easy-to-make, grab your sharpener. It will allow you to prep your utensil safely at lightning speed.

Manual and electric sharpeners are easy-to-use. They are versatile, need zero-skill, and provide quicker results than traditional sharpening stones and systems.

Shopping for the right one, though, is no easy task. Some have helpful settings and dust collecting features, which is why we have tested sharpeners to find the best ones worth the investment.

Our team has also considered online customer reviews, personal experiences, and our testing experience.

In this testing experience, all the knife sharpening tests provide data that are as factual as possible. To test so many knife sharpeners, we needed many dull knives, which we happened to find a lot after our best knife set testing experience. We wanted to ensure that the knife sharpeners meet several essential characteristics that most buyers would appreciate. These features are that the knife sharpeners are:

  • Easy to use: despite the model, brand, or type of sharpener one chooses to purchase, it is always necessary that it is easy to use.
  • Can create a sharp enough edge: Let’s face it, a knife sharpener is useless if it does not provide sharp straight edges. Your knife must be able to slice through both tomatoes and meat just as smoothly.
  • It can be used to sharpen a wide variety of knives: There is no need to have a knife sharpening tool that can only sharpen specific or certain types of blades. That would create the need for more than one sharpening device, which will only take up space in the kitchen.

These reasons are why these criterias were selected for our testing experiences.

Whether you have one beloved knife or a set, this list can help you find the best knife sharpener to keep your blades razor-sharp. These sharpeners are from trusted brands, got my test-backed recommendation, and have lots of five-star reviews from real Amazon members. In this article you will find the best electronic and manual sharpeners for your needs.

The Most Popular Types of Knife Sharpeners

There are several kinds of sharpening devices available to create and maintain the sharp edge of blades. Knife sharpeners have four main types: manual, electric, whetstones, and honing rods. The most popular type of knife sharpener is manual.

Let’s take a quick look at the pros and cons of each type.

Honing rods do not sharpen. Instead, they realign bent out of shape edges. Once straightened by sharpening steel, you will need a sharpener.

Manual knife sharpeners are handheld, and you either pull the knife through a slot or pull the sharpener over the blade. The pulling action allows for more control than the electric sharpening process.

Handheld is simple to use, but your physical effort is required.

Electrics have a similar pull-through design as the manual with spinning sharpening stones inside. They usually have two or more slots to help fine-tune sharpness with little effort. However, you will have to be careful not to shorten the life of your blade by shaving off more metal than necessary.

Whetstones give ultimate control and are the preferred choice of professionals. The user runs the knife back and forth on the stone to sharpen one side at a time. The learning curve is steep to gain the correct angle and pressure. If the whetstone doesn’t have a refined side, you may need to purchase multiple stones to achieve different grit levels.

How to Pick the Best Knife Sharpeners

As you may have realized by now. Knife sharpeners differ in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and purposes. It is therefore critical to have an idea of how one should pick the best knife sharpener. Firstly the best knife sharpener is one that suits the needs of the purchaser and their particular situations. Just like no two persons are the same, the way they will use their tools are not the same. So here are a few pointers you should consider when seeking to pick the best knife sharpener:

The blade on your knives:

It is essential to know what material the blade of your knives are made of and see the type of sharpener you should get, whether a course or mild grit or a ceramic or diamond abrasive.

Price:

It is crucial to identify how much you would like to spend on a knife sharpener. The cost of a sharpening tool for your knives ranges from $10 to $250 and above. Have a budget in mind and stick to it.

Degree of sharpness:

Some sharpeners can sharpen from 11 to 30 degrees; others can not. Have an understanding of what degree of thickness you require to ensure you are getting a knife sharpener that can suit your needs.

Creating a very sharp edge9
Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives9

Our testing experience:

During our testing experience, the first thing that was noticed is how lightweight this sharpener is. It is not bulky, nor does it take up a lot of space on the counter. The edges created by this knife had testers cut everything around to see how quickly it would lose its sharpness, and it did not. This sharpener is tested as the best overall because it can work with multiple blades, stainless steel material, and patented technology that makes the knife sharpening process faster and easier. While it’s testing was being conducted, the significant issue found was having to hold the blade to where you want it some of the time. I must add that this tool’s presentation would look as if it is a piece of artwork in your kitchen rather than a knife sharpener.

Pros

  • Automatically adjusts to the knives angle
  • Sharpens, polishes, and realigns the knives blade all at once
  • Does not damage the knife during sharpening

Cons

  • Having to hold the sharpener to the angle of the knife
  • A lot of knocks offs you may need to search for the real thing.

What we liked:

  • This tool is not made from cheap material that you will have to worry about further down the line.
  • We appreciate that the manufacturers took the time to create the right style and design for this product. This product could pass as a feature in your kitchen rather than a kitchen tool.
  • We liked that this patented technology can adjust to the knife's angle, taking away all the guesswork out of the process. Even more impressive is that you do not have to remove the metal from the handle to sharpen the blade. This can be an asset, especially if you have multiple knives to sharpen.

What we didn’t like:

  • This sharper is not suitable for cutters big in the body area; I would not try this on an ax.
  • It can be a challenging learning curve for this sharpener. After you learn how to use the tool, you should be okay.
  • Here is another sharpener with the location of where it was made is not as advertised. While the product page says it was made in Austria, the actual product says it was made in China. This may concern persons as the quality will come into question.
  • Parts of this tool were made with Plastic parts. This is not ideal for the longevity of the product. Using an inferior part may also cause the product to break easily.
  • This product is more on the expensive side. Most persons would not pay more for a product when they can get another one for less that works just as fine.

Overview

This knife sharpener is a multi-purpose tool that is well equipped to take on any task.  Verified shoppers who have purchased this tool from Amazon.com states that this professional-grade sharpener is very easy to use and works on most blades. It is on the more expensive side and may seem a little bulky and heavy for some. Manufacturers of this knife sharpener swear by it and state that it will bring back your knife set to its original condition, in some cases sometimes better than the factory versions. You may want to consider protecting the smaller pieces. This is so that they do not get lost if you ever have to pull the sharpener apart; As you may need to replace them often.

Pros

  • Sharpens multiple blades, both large and small.
  • Most parts are replaceable and can be purchased with ease.

 Cons

  • A bit overpriced
  • Too many removal parts to keep track of

What we liked:

  • This knife gives a professional sharp every time and can restore life to any blade, including scissors and axes.
  • Clear instructions are provided with this tool, lessening the learning curve and errors that may occur.

What we didn’t like:

  • This sharpener may scratch the knife, leaving unwanted marks. Of course, this is a turnoff but not one that can not find a go-around, like wrapping a knife with tape and a towel.
  • The guides on this tool are short; customers complained of the sharpener's sandbelt being made with inferior quality. This, of course, can damage the integrity of the entire product.
  • The Power supply of this sharpener is a 120V, not 220v. If your house uses a higher volt of current, you may be at risk of damaging the tool or even causing a fire.

9 / 10 Overall Rating
Easy to use8.5
Creating a very sharp edge9
Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives9.5

Our testing experience:

When we tested this sharpener, it was my first time using an electric knife sharpener, and I must say, it left a lasting impression. This tool is very lightweight, one of the lightest in our testing experience. There was no guesswork in the setup. Sliding the knife into the sharpener required no effort, and this tool can sharpen a 15 degree blade, which not many other sharpers can achieve. When we pointed a knife (so dull it could hardly cut bread) for 15 solid minutes, the result was as if we just purchased this set from the factory. The feeling was incredible and left us wanting to find even more blades to sharpen. Based on several reviews on amazon.com, it was related that this sharpener does not sharpen scissors, we decided to test this theory for ourselves. We got a pair of scissors and tried it out; what happened is that the top of the scissors was okay but from the middle downwards posted some difficulty.

Pros

  • Can sharpen up to a 20degree edge
  • lightweight
  • Sharpens several different knife points.

Cons

  • It is not suited for larger cutting tools or scissors.
  • It may leave a weird mark on your knives.
  • It may take longer to sharpen some knives.

What we liked:

  • This sharpening tool gives a clean and sharp blade with little to no effort. It is always good to get it right the first time to reduce the tension on edge and get the sharpness you need.
  • It does not give off a lot of metal dust when compared to some other knife sharpeners. While some metal dust is expected, Trizor stands out among others in this area, especially with an electric sharpener.

What we didn’t like:

  • This sharpener does not sharpen scissors as the handle of the blade may be too difficult to reach. This is disappointing as it would be a waste to purchase two sharpeners instead of one with all the functionality you require.
  • Some customers complained of weird noise coming from their sharpener. This experience was not present when we tested this tool for the testing experience. However we must consider it, so future customers have an idea of what others experienced.

Best priced knife sharpener: Presto 08800 EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener

Specifications:

  • Product Dimensions: 9.9 x 7.2 x 4.8 inches
  • Item Weight: 2.95 pounds
  • Manufacturer: Presto

Check Price on Amazon

Overview:

The Presto knife sharpener is affordable and a handy product to have around. This tool is a fraction of the cost of other sharpeners on the list. It does not sharpen the serrated edges and rougher blades; It sharpens regular knives well according to customers’ feedback. If you have a knife set that all knives have straight edges, including the steak knives, this sharpener will be okay. Reviewers describe this tool as lightweight and very easy to use, but most suited if you are not a professional chef who cooks often and only needs to sharpen your knives now and then. This two-stage sharpener works electronically and can provide a razor-sharp blade. The presto knife sharpener only uses 120 volts of current in case you have a 220-volt current and was made in China.

Pros

  • Sharpens both sides of the knife
  • extremely easy to use

Cons

  • Do not sharpen serrated edges.
  • Lightweight and easy to carry around.

What we liked:

  • Cost-effective if you are on a budget and need a useful knife sharpening tool.
  • Other than the cost, another outstanding feature of this product is that the sharpener provides precise edges. This takes the guesswork out of how you need to angle the knife to achieve the sharpness you are looking for.
  • The Presto uses Sapphire sharpening wheels, a material used in most professional knife making and sharpening shops. Customers appreciate this, as they believe the quality of the material used to make the product will determine how well the product works.
  • Customers can have a little peace of mind as manufacturers offer a one year warranty against defects on this product.

What we didn’t like:

  • The grinding wheel seemed a bit too coarse for some thin blade knives, which could ruin the knife's quality.
  • The grinding wheel appears as if it would jam over time, based on some sounds you hear while sharpening the blades.
  • The Presto sharpener has been reviewed as having a weak motor. While the product's price hints that everything may not be perfect, a weak engine means that your knives will take longer to sharpen or may not be sharp enough. Some customers even added that larger blades stop the motor, as the motor's size is not powerful enough.
  • Very noisy was another complaint from verified purchasers. Having a noisy sharpener is often a sign of a struggling motor and that your tool may soon need to be replaced.

9.2 / 10 Overall Rating
Easy to use9

Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives9.5

Our testing experience:

I had no idea; I would like this sharpening stone as much as I did. This one does not move out of place as most sharpening rocks do. It is durable, lightweight, and can sharpen a lot of different knives, even an ax. While we enjoyed the testing experience for this tool, I was not too fond of the idea of having to use this for my thinner blades as it may be a little too hard for thin blades. I, however, enjoyed trying different types of blades on this sharpening tool. If you sharpen your knives, you often get additional stones and store them in a cool, dry place. By our observation, this stone works on a chef knife, steak knife, santoku knife, paring knife, sushi knife, cleaver knife, BBQ knife, Hunting Knife, Pocket Knifekitchen knives, Japanese knife, butcher knife, paring knife, Scissor, Chisel, Blade, Straight Razor, it can even sharp an ax. You may also need some form of sharpening oil, which is not included with this purchase.

Pros

  • Multipurpose Use
  • Cost-effective
  • Parts are replaceable and easy to get

Cons

  • Stone wears down quickly
  • Stone may be too rough for some blades

What we liked:

  • This tool can sharpen a variety of knives in all sizes.
  • For the amount of usage you can get from this stone, the price is not very high.
  • The bamboo base on this product is non-slip and gives the product a unique look and design. We like that this tool's overall look is seamless and will add nicely to your kitchen.
  • This Whetstone is a good recommendation for persons who like to take on projects themselves. The manufacturer provides straightforward easy to follow instructions that will make the process easier.

What we didn’t like:

  • Some customers complained of the stone cracking and needing to be replaced with very little use.
  • You will need to have replacement stones on hand if the one you are using wears out before you are done.
  • The stone on this sharpener seems to be held up by an adhesive that sometimes melts. When this happens, the stone may break or fall apart. This means the stone may need to be replaced, if not the entire tool.
  • Some customers complained they have received a large number of marketing emails from the company after purchase.

8.3 / 10 Overall Rating
Easy to use8
Creating a very sharp edge8
Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives9

Our testing experience:

When this knife sharpening tool arrived in the mail, our team was excited to try it out and go old school for a change. Throughout the process, We were both satisfied and disappointed with many aspects of this tool. The first thing noticed was that some of the material was not as described by the manufacturer. Some metal parts were aluminum when stainless steel would be a better fit where quality is concerned. Using this sharpener was not as easy as it could be, like the lining up to find the right angle took some time and it does not seem suited for all knife types, especially the thinner ones. My chef knife and utility knife got a nice sharp edge after using this tool, and we like that most of the parts were replaceable and can be repurchased if lost.

Pros

  • Cost-effective
  • Easy to use and can be fun

Cons

  • Not suitable for all knife types and blade
  • May need to replace the screws in the clamp because of quality

What we liked:

  • This set comes with extra parts that will come in handy. These pieces include extra-coarse, fine alumina oxide coarse, medium, fine alumina oxide, and extra-fine ceramic hones. Giving the user the ability to sharpen different types of knives.
  • Lansky can cut as low as a 17 degree, which is ideal for delicate blades that need to be very sharp. It also cuts at a 30-degree angle that will make your knife sharp enough to cut rope and cardboard.
  • Surprisingly this tool is not as expensive as you would think, and 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, implying that this product is doing something correctly.
  • Does the sharpening and honing at the same time.

What we didn’t like:

  • The material used to make this product could be of better quality. I think people would rather pay more for the quality materials that would last longer.
  • It can be time-consuming to get all your knives sharpened with this method when compared to other methods.
  • Several customers complained that the advertising was not as described. The Lansky was advertised as being made in the USA when it was made in China. Of course, this will cause customers to distrust other information and data manufacturers put out on the product.
  • In the views of other customers, this product is not worth the risk of it not working. The number one reason was that the blade kept falling out of the clamp.

Easy to use9
Creating a very sharp edge9
Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives7.5

Our testing experience:

Our testing experience for this sharpener has an amusing story. While time may not permit, let us say that this sharpener is not suited for scissors, hunting knives, pocket knives, folding knives, or serrated edges. We tried sharpening some of these blades before seeing that it was listed in the manufacturer’s instructions. That was okay as this knife won its category for its expertise in sharpening ceramic and stainless steel edges. It was discovered that sharpeners with a ceramic grinder blade would not sharpen ceramic knives well; you will need diamond as the abrasive, which is where this sharpener comes in. It was easy to use and lightweight and gave a Sharp edge. Overall, we were not disappointed with these knives’ quality results but wished this sharper could take on serrated edges.

Pros

  • Specialized for certain knives
  • Lightweight and easy to carry around

Cons

  • Limited in the type of edges, it can sharpen
  • May have steel dust after use

What we liked:

  • This knife sharpener takes on jobs others can not handle well. The diamond blade provides a sharp edge on all knives, including ceramic and stainless steel, which other knife sharpeners may have a hard time sharpening.
  • It is lightweight and cost-effective, too, and will not take up a lot of space on your countertops or in the kitchen. The convenience this tool provides is yet another reason why it stands out among others.

What we didn’t like:

  • You may still need an additional sharpener if your ceramic knives include serrated edges. The fact that it can not sharpen jagged edges does take away from the tool. Again people would try to avoid purchasing more than one device for the same task.
  • The material used to make this set could be of better quality than they are. Customers tend to judge roos based on the material used to make them and where they are made. If the material is cheap and weak, one could assume that it will affect the lifespan and quality result from the sharpener.

Our testing experience

This knife sharpener created one of the most exciting testing experiences we have ever conducted. We took turns trying this sharpener out on several different dull knives, and the results are here. While this tool may tire the hand if done for some time in the same position, it will get your knives as sharp as you want them. We tried them on many different blades including serrated edges, and they worked just fine. Overall this sharpener is easy to use and not hard to figure out. You will get the edge on your blade that you are looking for, but it may take some time to achieve this. No issues were found using this honing steel to sharpen different edges.

Pros

  • Extremely cheap
  • Lightweight weighs less than a pound.

Cons

  • Time-consuming
  • tiring

What we liked:

  • This tool is easy to carry around and hardly noticeable. You can add it to a drawer and care for it as you would a knife. It takes up no space even when in use; this is why many customers choose this sharpener.
  • This product received several positive reviews on Amazon, showing that customers are more satisfied than dissatisfied with the overall outcome. For some customers, manually sharpening their knives is not their thing. At the same time, others manage the process just fine.

What we didn’t like:

  • This particular sharpener may take a long time to sharpen incredibly dull knives, not recommended if you are in a hurry. Even though it is recommended that you sharpen your knives when a little sharpness is still left in them, some people may miss this opportunity. If this is the case, you will find that the blade's duller is, the longer the knife will take to sharpen.
  • Based on the material used to make this knife, we worry that it may rust if exposed to moisture over time. Upon observation and customer reviews, this tool has a reputation for rusting at different knife sections. This, of course, is unwelcomed as you want your sharpening tool in the best conditions.

Easy to use8
Creating a very sharp edge9
Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives8

Our testing experience:

Our next knife sharpener was the heavy-duty knife sharpener by WEN. Right off the bat, we identified that no dull blade could stand against this sharpener. It is the heaviest on the testing experience, but it met all the excellent knife sharpener requirements. It is easy to use and gives a sharpening like no other tool on our list. It would, however, take some time as it runs a bit slow at only one speed. The machine’s speed reduces the risk of accidents based on our observation, but it also takes up time. It sharpened knives of different shapes and sizes and did not damage the blade itself. It uses a sharpening block, which may need to be replaced after a few uses. They are, however, inexpensive to replace.

Pros:

  • Ideal for knife makers
  • effective and sharp finish

Cons:

  • Only has one speed, which may be time-consuming
  • The sharpening stone block may need to be replaced regularly

What we liked:

  • This product will be an asset if you are a knifemaker and need a heavy-duty sharpener for multiple knives and edges. While this tool is more extensive than most, it is also more durable and can last longer with care.
  • We all know that we lose pieces or break a piece of equipment that will need to be replaced now and then. We like this sharpener because almost all of the parts can be purchased separately and returned.

What we didn’t like:

  • Well, you may not have heard about technology and a knife sharpener. But there are tools with newer technology and which makes it much easier to sharpen a knife. This same technology may cause this model of knife sharpeners to phase out, making part hard to get in the long run.
  • This product is bulky and heavy to carry around. This tool would only be ideal if kept in one place, which is not always convenient depending on the purpose you are looking to purchase a sharpener for.

Best knife sharpener for serrated blades: Smiths DRET Diamond Retractable Sharpener

Specifications:

  • Grit: Medium
  • Features: Manual

Testing results:

8.7 / 10 Overall Rating
Easy to use9
Creating a very sharp edge9
Ability to sharpen various kinds of knives8

Our testing experience:

This small tool can take on big jobs. That is why we were excited to add it to our testing experience. When it came out of the package, I expected it to be a little bigger; it was, however, the size of a pen. The manufacturer’s label stated that this product was retractable, it is not entirely. We tested this product on both serrated edges and straight edges, and it worked well on both surfaces. This product, however, is not ideal for more extensive and tedious sharpening projects. It is hardly noticeable and can easily be lost because of this same reason. We recommend using the clip attached if possible. Or you could spend half a day searching for this product as I did. It is easy to use and requires manual work, but the result is a well-sharpened edge.

Pros

  • Small and lightweight
  • It has a pocket clip so it will not be lost easily

Cons

  • Not suited for all blades
  • It does not fully retract

What we liked:

  • If you already have a knife sharpener with a ceramic abrasive, this small sharpener would be an ideal addition. It has a diamond abrasive good for ceramic and stainless steel edges. Not many people know that specific blades need to be sharpened by particular materials.
  • This sharpener is hardly noticeable but can serve lots of purposes. Its small size makes it barely noticeable, while the functionality of the tools makes it stand out. We see this point expressed in several customer reviews on Amazon.com.

What we didn’t like:

  • Based on this knife sharpener's quality, I fear it may break easily if placed against larger blades. The material used to create products predicts the tool's lifespan and how the sharpening it gives.
  • The abrasive may wear off quickly based on the size of the sharpener. Glues overall may wear out or go wrong for various reasons. The main question is, is this abrasive replaceable and easily replaced.

Care and Maintenance Tips

Caring for your knife sharpener like most kitchen tools is no walk in the park. But it is essential to know-how to preserve the longevity of the sharpeners’ quality. Here we provide tips to assist you in caring for your knife sharpener. Let us begin:

  • Keep your knife sharpener stored in a clean and dry area.
  • If your knife sharpener uses a motor, try not to run the sharpener for too long without giving it a rest.
  • Try to avoid metal dust from getting into the sharpener; this could block the motor and cause build up in your sharpener.
  • If you are using a stone sharpener, ensure to wet the stone occasionally. This does not only give a sharper blade but also preserve the stone from cracking.
  • Keep a firm hold on the knife’s handle and your shoulders when using a stone to sharpen your knives. A firm grip will cause the blade not to have a rugged edge and sharpens the knife faster.
  • When using sharpening steel, the proper way to do this is to tip the steel on the counter and have the sharpener in a vertical position. Hold the knife on the steel at a 15-degree handle to ensure safety and effortless sharpening.
  • Not all users like to read the instructions manual, but different blades require different sharpener requirements. Read manufacturers’ instructions carefully to ensure the sharpener you selected is appropriate for the utensils you use.

These are only a few of the tips you should consider when caring for your knife sharpener. While considering these, remember your number one objective is first and foremost your safety.
