How Do Pellet Smokers Work?

Looking at a pellet grill, one may be convinced that this cooker is hard to use and complicated to understand. This misconception over there could not be further from the truth. Like any new appliance, all you need is a bit of understanding and the patient to let it work. No, we break down for you to understand just how a pellet smoker works.

All pellet cookers have a cooking chamber in which air is circulated. Once this chamber is heated, you can cook your favorite rack of ribs, fish, turkey, and you name it. The cooking chamber is sometimes referred to as the firepot or burn pot, and this is where you can add charcoal or hardwood pellets to burn.

When the fire starts getting low, pellets are automatically dispensed from a hopper that is generally above the cooking chamber.

The pellets are pushed down a chute into the heart of the burning chamber. On some pellet cookers, the airflow can control the temperature of the range. For higher temperatures, heavy-duty fans pull air into the range while heat is released through the smoker’s top lid to reduce the temperature.

Given The number of pellet smokers on the market, each creator tried to add their creativity to the products. What that leaves us with are a wide variety and options to choose from. There are pellet grills with WIFI connectivity and a variety of cooking options. Overview:

Here is another smoker from Traeger, the tailgater 2 model, which includes a stable and even look and design. Manufacturers stated that they created this grill with Arc control and advanced grilling logic. This Traeger has a meat probe, a 5-degree temperature setting, and can be powered by both wood pellets and electricity.

The total cooking space is 300 Square inches, and up to 8lbs of pellets can hold in the hopper at a time. This smoker is not bulky, which makes it easier to store than larger smokers. It conveniently comes with two wheels for transportability, which are also barely noticeable. The finish and design on this smoker are clean full black with a compact design. You can fold the grill to fit in the back of a vehicle or for easy storage. It does have a small LED display with easy to use and understand standard controls.

The entire grill is lightweight when compared to other grills of some capacity. While the price is on the higher end, it is a favorite among buyers and grill lovers.

Testing Experience:

The Traeger tailgater 2 is one of the first smokers we tested in our in-home kitchen, and we were not disappointed. While we were a little down about the smoker’s size, the other functionalities made it easy not to miss having a larger smoker. One thing about this smoker is that it has a meat probe that allows you to test the meat’s internal temperature without opening the lid smokers lid.

The grill on the inside is non-stick, making it a little easier to clean and get the meat off. There is also an option for the smoker to keep the meat warm even after the grill is turned off. Set up was a bit time consuming, which was our fault; if you read the manufacturer’s instructions, you should be fine. We added 12 burgers to the grill to test out the evenness and temperature control, and we had no evident problem even after a few trials. Our main downer, as mentioned before, was the size of the smoker.

Pros

  • Lightweight and Easy to transports
  • Easy to assemble and operate

Cons

  • The cooking space may be too small
  • The price is on the higher end

What we liked:

  • This is a fantastic grill to throw in the back of the van for an away game or beach day as it is lightweight, easy to transport, and easy to set up.
  • The wood fire taste left in the food is spectacular. You will experience the flavor of cooking with wood rather than electricity.
  • It has a reasonably sized pellet holder, which is up to 8 pounds. Given the smoker's size, the pellet will not need to be changed every minute, giving you more time to enjoy what is happening around you.
  • Traeger's Digital Arc Controller allows this smoker to give a more consistent and control temperature when preparing your meat.

What we didn’t like:

  • We did not like that this grill only has one rack. The smoker itself is not very large, which would mean an additional grill if you have a large event or get together.
  • Customers complained of the fan and rod not working even before the grill has been used. One would not expect to be sending back and replacing parts for such a huge price tag.
  • Several customers complained of customer service not being as helpful and taking a long time to process requests and information. This, of course, can be very downing, especially when looking forward to using a new appliance.

  • This appliance's primary power source is wood pellets, and you can, however, use a low amp car battery or a small solar panel to power this smoker. This serves as a convenient backup if needs be. But most people like the smell of the meat when prepared with the wood pellets.

What we didn’t like:

  • Customers complained of poor customer service support and warranty fulfillment after their product broke down. While no one purchases a smoker with its intention of breaking down, it is even worse when the company does not hold up its end of the bargain.
  • The grill is said to have hot spots, areas of the grill hotter than others, and tend to burn the meat if not given special attention. Other than the hot spots, the grill overall does not cook the meat evenly for some people; sometimes the meat is undercooked and sometimes overcooked.

  • Verified customers have complained that the pellets stop working, which has caused the smoker to stop cooking within only a few weeks of use.

  • The cost of this grill is very affordable compared to other grills with the same functionality. On average, smokers that are available in this price range would be with less functionality.

What we didn’t like:

  • Customers complained about the pellet feeder not working only after a few uses. This, of course, will affect the temperature of the meat and cause the meat not to be fully cooked.
  • Temperature setting is said to stop working and runs out of control even after several troubleshoots. Other customers complained of moving the temperature range back and forth as it would move by itself to a higher temperature within minutes. This, of course, will ruin not only the meat but also family events in the case this ever happened to you.

The temperature on this grill goes to a maximum of 1000 degrees, and you have the option of changing this grill to sealing mode.

The temperature is said by manufacturers to be well controlled as it stays within 10 degrees of the temperature that it is set for. It burns the wood pellets very efficiently, giving you a ratio of 20 hours of cooking for each 20lb of the pellet. This will save both time and money. This grill has an electronic ignition, which makes it even easier to start up your smoker. A digital automatic temperature control, an electric automated feeder system, and a LED temperature display are only a few of this smoker’s features.

Cons

  • setup was complicated for some customers
  • The temperature on this grill is not always consistent
  • The hopper could be better constructed

What we liked:

  • The design and color of this smoker are noteworthy. This smoker is not too bulky and would fit into any design and any space, even compact.
  • This grill's capacity is impressive; you can prepare a fair amount of food at once, with not much effort. While the 601 square inches does include the warmer top, the grill size is still enough for a family of 5.
  • Customers expressed how fast and easy it is to work with the customer service representatives for this company. This, of course, is an advantage as you want to ensure that you will get the needed assistance if the need arises.

What we didn’t like:

  • Several customers have complained about the temperature not working, not providing smoke, or being out of control.
  • If something should get damaged on your cooker, the replacement parts are low quality and will not be sure to work. This, of course, is frustrating, and you would properly end up paying more than you need to.
  • Other customers expressed that the smoker's lid did not sit well on the grill but instead left a large gap, which means that the grill would not be adequately sealed. Wood pellets may burn out faster, and the smoke may be released in places you would want it to be trapped.

Overview:

Here is another smoker that is much different than what you are used to, but according to customer reviews, it works just as well. It has latched leads, a mood to keep your food warm, meat probes that allow you to test the meat’s temperature without opening the lid, and digital Arc control. This smoker is not very large, which makes it an ideal travel size. While you may have to cook your food in smaller portions, the quality and Taste are not compromised.

This smoker can fit in the trunk of your vehicle, great for forest cooking and outdoor living, especially if you do not have a lot of space. You were okay with the temperature control on this range that your food will be the precise temperature you set it at. This smoker was built for the road.

The total weight of this grill is 60 pounds, and it comes with most of the features of a standard grill.

Testing experience:

When the smoker arrived, we were excited to try it out based on the customer reviews and comments. The packaging was well put together, and the setup process was the most manageable for the smokers in our testing experience.

We wanted to see how your average burgers would smoke as well as a rack of rib. After trying both, this smoker did live up to its positive reviews. The main problem we found was the size of the grease bucket for larger portions of meat. You will need to keep emptying the bucket to keep everything clean and to avoid a spill. Other than that, the smoker worked just as expected. Six burgers fit this smoker comfortably; larger racks of meat will need to be done one at a time.

Pros

  • Great for camping and outdoor experiences
  • Easy to control and maneuver

Cons

  • I would not recommend it for home or personal use.
  • A smoker with a convection fan may give more flavor.

What we liked:

  • We like how easy this smoker is to use and to set up. The smoker's convenience is next level as you can easily pack it up and be on the move. If you live in a camper, this is an easy way for you to feel at home, even on the go.
  • It is easier for the smoke to escape with such a small smoker once the lid is open often. This is why the meat probe on the smoker makes so much sense. You can test the temperature of your meat without opening the lid.
  • This smoker comes with latches for the lid to secure and keep the top closed while on the move. This not only secures your smoker but any moving part that may be inside.

What we didn’t like:

  • Even when all those extra precautions are needed when operating this grill, I want children. This grill is far easier to burn someone than a conventional smoker would.
  • For this smoker to work effectively, you would need a level surface to operate it on. If you are in a park, park bench me do just fine, or you could try walking with a small table to operate your smoker.
  • The price tag on the smoker is on the higher end. We understand the functionality and the convenience of the smoker, the price tag on it, is a bit high.

What we didn’t like:

  • This grill's cost is on the higher end of what one would want to pay for a smoker. Even though it performs several functions, a similar grill that does the same is available for less price tag.
  • Cast Iron Material is used to make this grill, which calls the grill's overall quality into question. While it looks sturdy and not many customers have complained about decline, we still hope this grill can handle the test of time.
  • Some people complained that the temperature control was off. While this happens from time to time with smokers, it is an unfortunate event as persons want to cook with confidence, knowing that their food will not be damaged, whether undercooked or overcooked.

This smoker was one of our favorites in the testing experience. It came in well-placed packaging and was no hassle at all to set up. There is a lot of automation with this smoker. You can set it up to your requirements and leave it to do its thing in many ways. The rack of our grill was a bit loose, which we quickly fixed by adjusting. There was no guesswork with the assembly as the manufacturer’s instructions were easy to follow.

Hot dogs on this grill came out just like we wanted them, with even the grill lines to the side. The fire pit is right in the middle of this grill like we like it, which provides an even cook of whatever is on the grill. Overall the issues we found with this grill needed minor adjustments to be addressed. While it is not a larger grill, some would be preferred; it works just fine as a small grill.

Pros

  • Easy to store and transport
  • Superior temperature control and distribution

Cons

  • It does not come with a stand
  • Maybe too small for some groups

  • We like that the customer service representatives are always willing to answer your questions and assist when needed. They also provide a five-year warranty against damages if anything goes wrong with your smoker within that period.

What we didn’t like:

  • It is not always convenient to carry around a different stand to reach an acceptable cooking height.
  • Cooking on the smoker may take longer as it is smaller than traditional smokers, which means that it is not ideal for larger groups.
  • Some customers complained of the smoker not working after only a few uses. While this was not the case with our testing experience, we must consider all the customers' experience.
  • Some customers complain that the smoker takes too long to eat up, and not everyone had a good experience with customer service to get assistance.

  • The pellet holder stores a fair amount of pellets, which means you will spend less time refilling pellets and watching the fire.

What we didn’t like:

  • Assembly is said to be a lot of work and instructions to follow. Some customers complained of having to get an expert assistant to put up the grill. This would not be okay if you liked to do these kinds of projects yourself. Some customers also complained of dented parts that would not fit correctly on the smoker.
  • The features they were looking forward to did not work for some people, which was extremely disappointing. For example, the automatic light feature did not work for some customers.
